A study in JAMA Psychiatry found that an eight-week mindfulness meditation course can reduce anxiety as effectively as escitalopram (Lexapro). Involving 276 adults with untreated anxiety, both groups—those taking the medication and those practicing mindfulness-based stress reduction—reported about a 20% reduction in symptoms.
Lead author Elizabeth Hoge suggests this offers more treatment options for those who can’t tolerate medications. While cautioning against stopping prescribed meds without consulting a doctor, she sees meditation as a viable alternative.
Psychiatrist Joseph Arpaia notes the daily commitment for meditation may be challenging for some, advocating for less intensive methods. Both experts agree on the potential of mindfulness for managing anxiety and its applicability to other conditions like depression and ADHD, highlighting the need for further research into personalized treatments.
